A method of determining the time from the onset of atrial fibrillation to presentation in a patient comprising the steps of: (i) determining the level of MR-proANP (SEQ ID NO: 4) in a sample of a body fluid has been obtained from said patient and (ii) correlating the level of MR-proANP (SEQ ID NO: 4) with the time from the onset of atrial fibrillation to presentation in said patient, wherein the time from the start of atrial fibrillation to presentation to the patient is determined to be of, or above, a certain time limit value or below a certain limit time value, said lower limit value of 48 hours or more or 48 hours.
