Clamping device (1) for holding a plate (L) on a work surface (103) of a machining apparatus (100), said apparatus comprising a working head (108) holding a tool (M) for machining of the edge of the plate (L), said device comprising: - a base structure (2) that can be secured to the work surface (103), and - a lower fastener (4) and an upper fastener (5 ) to hold said plate (L) in between, which define a vertical clamping axis (A), and which can move each other in the direction of said vertical clamping axis (A), between an open non-operative position and an operative position closed in which the plate (L) is fastened, - in which said lower clamping element (4) is carried by said base structure (2), - in which said upper clamping element (5) is carried by a support unit (7) of the clamping element that is rotatably mounted in said st ructura (2) base around said vertical clamping axis and being characterized in that - said support unit (7) of the clamping element is adapted to detect the presence of the working head (108) adjacent to it, and to make a movement of oscillation around said vertical clamping axis (A) as the working head (108) advances around the plate (L) for machining the edge of the plate, in order to avoid interference with the head (108 ) of work.
