A method of identifying relative cancer risk in a human subject, comprising identifying whether a test tissue sample from the test human comprises at least one expression profile of transcribed ultraconserved regions (RUC-T) that has a statistically significant correlation. with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC); wherein the RUC-T expression profile comprises an identification of eight RUCs: uc.20, uc.402, uc.252, uc.396, uc.274, uc.27, uc.23 and uc.198; in which a statistically significant correlation indicates a relative risk of HCC; and wherein RUC-T in the RUC-T expression profile are differentially expressed between normal and malignant cells.
