A composition comprising an extract of Rhizoma Coptidis as an active ingredient for use in suppressing cough or eliminating sputum, in which the extract of Rhizoma Coptidis is a crude extract obtained using one or more solvents selected from the group consisting of in linear or branched alcohol having 1 to 4 carbons or an aqueous solution of C1-4 alcohol as extraction solvent, or a solvent soluble extract obtained by adding an aqueous solution of linear or branched alcohol having 1 to 6 carbons to crude extract.
