A method of transferring pipes from a carrier vessel to a laying vesselprovides forgripping the pipes (3) in the hold (11) of the carrier vessel (2) andreleasing the pipes (3),in a given position, inside a transfer station (14) on the carrier vessel (2)by means of amanipulator (13) mounted on the carrier vessel (2); and guiding a grippingdevice (38),connected to a crane (7), into said given position at the transfer station(14).
