A novel method is disclosed for preparing reinforced catalyst layers forcatalyst coated membranes in fuelcells. A hydrophilic expanded polymer sheet (e.g. ePTFE) is used forreinforcement in order to improve themechanical durability of the catalyst layers. Advantageously, a pure aqueousbased catalyst ink can be usedin the coating process for preparing the catalyst layers.
