The invention relates to a method for producing hydrophobized doped or non-doped mixed metal oxide nanoparticles or doped metal oxide nanoparticles using flame spray pyrolysis. A combustible precursor solution A containing at least two metal alkyloates of the general formula Me(OOC-R)x with different metals Me or a combustible precursor solution B containing at least one metal alkyloate of the general formula Me(OOC-R)x and at least one metal salt containing a metal ion Me, wherein Me is selected from metal ions of the sub-groups of the periodic system of elements, R = alkyl or aryl, the alkyl chain is branched or unbranched, and x corresponds to the oxidation stage of the metal ion. The precursor solution is used stoichiometrically in excess with respect to an oxygen quantity, and a combustion ratio Φ of 3.5 to 0.4 is set. The invention also relates to hydrophobized nanoparticles and to the use thereof.
