The invention relates to a method for controlling and monitoring a passenger door system (2) of a people-transporting vehicle, according to which a control and regulating algorithm of a control device (1) of the passenger door system (2) controls and regulates a time-dependent opening and closing cycle (s_Tür (t), v_Tür (t)) of the passenger door system (2); environment data of environment parameters produced by other systems (3) of the vehicle, such as vehicle environment temperature and a vehicle position, are provided to the control device (1); characteristic maps relating to said environment parameters and/or characteristic curves of correcting variables for the door actuation, relating to said environment parameters, are first stored in the control device (1) or produced or updated in self-learning routines; and an idealised opening and closing cycle (s_ideal, v_ideal) of the passenger door system (2) is stored in the control device (1). Furthermore, according to the invention, the control and regulating algorithm is used to continuously adapt or at least approximate the opening and closing cycle (s_Tür (t), v_Tür (t)) of the passenger door system (2) to the idealised opening and closing cycle (s_ideal, v_ideal), taking into account the characteristic maps relating to environment parameters and/or the characteristic curves relating to environment parameters, correction values of correcting variables for the door actuation being varied as required and associated correcting elements controlled correspondingly. The invention further relates to a control device (1) for carrying out said method.
