The present invention describes a method and a kit for detecting organic or inorganic, natural or synthetic analytes, and/or specific molecular regions in fluid media, comprising metallic nanorods with functionalised ends and analysis by dynamic light scattering. This invention can be used for recognising molecular species for various purposes, for example for detecting biomarkers in biological fluids for in vitro diagnosis. The detection of molecular species is important in various sectors, such as medical diagnosis, product quality monitoring, detection of microorganisms and pollutants in agriculture and animal husbandry, in the development of pharmaceuticals, in environmental monitoring, for monitoring drugs, explosives and bioterrorism agents, and for monitoring chemical and biological processes in general.
