This mental activity state assessment assisting apparatus assists in the assessment of a mental activity state using a plurality of types of brain activity signals. A mental activity state assessment assisting method comprises steps of: holding error calculation information that shows the correspondence between error measurement signals that show the level of factors which change the plurality of types of brain activity signals and which are factors other than the mental activity state, and errors, caused by the factors, in estimated values of the mental activity state that correspond to each of the plurality of types of brain activity signals; obtaining the error measurement signals; referring to the error calculation information to calculate, from the obtained error measurement signals, the errors caused by the error factors in the estimated values of the mental activity state that correspond to the plurality of types of brain activity signals; and selecting a first type brain activity signal to be output from among the plurality of types of brain activity signals on the basis of the size of each calculated error.
