Proposed are: a metal-substituted titanium oxide which has a property of being able to undergo phase transition from a crystal structure in a paramagnetic metal state to a crystal structure of a non-magnetic semiconductor when being subjected to pressure or light, which has a composition other than the conventional Ti3O5, and which can also be applied to fields other than conventional technical fields; and a method for producing a metal-substituted titanium oxide sintered body. The present invention can provide a metal-substituted titanium oxide having a crystal structure which does not undergo phase transition to a crystal structure having the characteristics of a non-magnetic semiconductor even at 460 [K] or lower, which maintains a paramagnetic metal state over the entire temperature range of 0-800 [K], and which undergoes phase transition to the crystal structure of a non-magnetic semiconductor when being subjected to pressure or light, and having a composition obtained by substituting a portion of the Ti sites of Ti3O5 with any one of Mg, Mn, Al, V, and Nb.
