The present invention relates to an apparatus and a method to control an opening of an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve provided in an engine using a compressed natural gas fuel, to maintain an exhaust gas temperature below a predetermined temperature. According to the present invention, a method to control an EGR valve of an engine comprises: a step of calculating an amount of an exhaust gas supplied from an exhaust line to an intake line depending on an engine operation condition; a step of controlling an opening the EGR valve in accordance with the amount of the exhaust gas calculated in the preceding step; a step of measuring a temperature of the exhaust gas discharged from a combustion chamber; and a step of increasing the opening of the EGR valve by a predetermined amount when the temperature of the exhaust gas discharged from the combustion chamber is greater than a predetermined reference temperature.
