The present invention relates to a process for the production of surface modified carbonaceous particles comprising dispersing carbonaceous particles with an amphipathic compound, spray drying the dispersion and calcining the dried material. The present invention also includes surface modified carbonaceous particles coated with amorphous carbon which can be obtained using, for example, the method of the present invention. The invention further relates to the use of said surface-modified carbonaceous particles in various technical applications, for example their use as an active material for a negative electrode of a lithium ion battery. The present invention also relates to a carbon brush or polymer composite material, and generally the composition optionally comprises said surface modified carbonaceous particles with other carbonaceous or non-carbonaceous materials.
