GAMMA TYPE FREE-PISTON STIRLING MACHINE CONFIGURATION

An improved free piston Stirling engine having a gamma configuration is provided. The displacer and each piston are reciprocable in a cylinder having an unobstructed opening into the common volume of the working space at the inner end. The common volume is formed by the intersection of the piston cylinders and the inward protrusions of the displacer cylinder. The displacer and the cylinders each have a reciprocating range extending into a common volume. The display drive rod is reciprocable within the drive rod cylinder and both are disposed outside the common volume and opposite the common volume from the display to each other. The display is connected to the display drive rod by a connecting rod on the display. Significantly, the displacer and pistons have complementary interface contours formed on their inner ends, which significantly reduces the dead volume of the gamma-configured organ.
