A System and a method for a grid-based geofencing service are disclosed. According to an embodiment of the present invention, the system for a grid-based geofencing service includes a storage unit for storing area information composed of one or more grids; and a determination unit that receives position coordinates of a moving object and determines whether the moving object exists in an area by referring to the area information. According to embodiments of the present invention, it is possible to effectively reduce the amount of calculation required to determine whether positioning data is located within a specific area in the geofencing service system. Accordingly, it is possible to effectively deal with the processing of a large amount of position tracking data collected in real time.
