The present invention relates to a composition for preventing or treating radiation syndrome which comprises an extract of cheonggukjang (fast-fermented soybean paste) as an active ingredient. More particularly, the present invention relates to a composition for preventing or treating radiation syndrome and a food composition for improving radiation syndrome, which comprise an extract of cheonggukjang as an active ingredient. The present invention can be used to provide a composition and a food composition for preventing or treating radiation syndrome which comprise an extract of cheonggukjang as an active ingredient, and to provide a composition for inhibiting variation of chromosome caused by radiation and a composition for retaining chromosome stability. In addition, the present invention can be used advisably to prevent, improve and treat diseases caused by radiation through the effect of inhibiting variation of genes provided by an extract of cheonggukjang.
