Laveth phase-related BCC metal hydride alloys have historically limited electrochemical capacities. A new example of such an alloy useful as an electrode active material is provided. Also provided is a method of activating such an alloy. Wherein the alloy has a composition represented by the following formula (I) Ti w V x Cr y M z wherein w + x + y + z = 1, 0.1 w 0.6, 0.1 x 0.6, 0.01 , B, Al, Si, Sn, and one or more transition metals to achieve a discharge capacity of at least 350 mAh / g for more than one cycle.
