The present invention relates to an apparatus and a method for executing content by channel type in a channel-based content providing system, enabling a user to easily find desired video on demand (VOD) content by channel without searching an existing complex menu category. According to one embodiment of the present invention, the method comprises the following steps of a user terminal: (a) receiving first channel information about a real time channel and second channel information about a content channel from a server in a multicasting mode, and generating and managing a total channel list including the received first and second channel information; (b) receiving content of a predetermined channel, which is selected by a user based on the generated total channel list to be received from the server in a unicasting mode; and (c) confirming a type of the predetermined channel based on the generated total channel list, and operating a player or an application according to the confirmed type to display the received content through a predetermined channel of a display device of the user terminal.;COPYRIGHT KIPO 2017
