The present invention relates to a system for automatically opening and closing a food waste collection box by using a smart phone application and a Bluetooth low energy (BLE) communications module, and to a method for controlling the same. According to the present invention, a user can more easily discard food waste as an entrance of a food waste collection box is automatically opened and closed just when the user accesses a communications range even without contacting a card or an RFID tag on the food waste collection box by using a BLE scheme rather than a conventional near field communications (NFC) scheme. Also, the system is interconnected with a smart phone application of the user, so the user can view various functions. When the user accesses the food waste collection box, an entrance thereof is automatically opened and closed. Thus, the user can easily discard food waste without contaminating his/her hand or clothing. The user can be also provided with various functions such as a real-time using amount or the like through a food waste smart phone application.
