The present invention is directed to graphene-based or different two-dimensional (2-D) material membranes that enable the passage of protons and neutrals, and to a method of facilitating permeation of protons or neutrals through the membrane. The present invention also relates to mono-crystalline membranes made from single- and multi-layers of graphene, hBN, molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ), and tungsten disulfide (WS 2 ). In practice, protons or neutrons are charge carriers that pass through graphene or different two-dimensional material membranes. This process can be contrasted with the passage of gas. Hydrogen is a subspecies gas species under the vision. In other words, the gas is typically in molecular form when considering barrier properties, whereas in the present case species moving through the membrane are charged ions containing a single atom. The membrane of the present invention has applications in various fields such as fuel cells.
