In the method for producing carbon fibers, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were mixed with a solution containing polyacrylonitrile (PAN) to form a CNT / PAN mixture. A heatable fabric comprising a plurality of fibers each having an axis. The plurality of fibers each comprise polyacrylonitrile and carbon nanotubes dispersed in predetermined weight percentages in the polyacrylonitrile and aligned along the axis of the plurality of fibers. The plurality of fibers are woven into the fabric. The current source is configured to be energized through a plurality of fibers to generate heat in the fibers.
