Methods and compositions are provided for reducing, preventing, or alleviating the progression of calcification in patients with peritoneal dialysis. In one embodiment, the disclosure provides a method comprising administering to a patient during peritoneal dialysis therapy a dialysis solution comprising a therapeutically effective amount of pyrophosphate ranging from about 30 [mu] M to about 400 [mu] M. The formulation of the dialysis solution according to the dosage range claimed in this disclosure allows a therapeutically effective amount of pyrophosphate to be delivered to the patient with peritoneal dialysis.
