The present invention relates to a pharmaceutical composition for preventing and treating dysmenorrhea and preterm labor, comprising a non-polar solvent fraction of a ginger extract as an effective component. The non-polar fraction of ginger according to the present invention has an excellent effect at suppressing voluntary or drug-induced contraction of uterine smooth muscle, and thus may be beneficially used in the prevention and treatment of dysmenorrhea or preterm labor. Additionally, products using ginger powder and extracts are being sold worldwide, and these products are known for being favorably received by users, while only minor adverse reactions are intermittently reported associated with its long-term use. Additionally, there has been no reported increase in pattern or frequency of unusual adverse reactions from using ginger as compared to the placebo control group. Ginger, when orally administered, has high clearance rate while the main components of ginger, shogaol or gingerol are absorbed 90% or more without accumulating in the body, and thus is considered safe even when repeatedly administered within the recommended allowance of a commercial product.
