The present invention relates to a breast cancer stem cell growth controlling composition or a fragrant composition including phenylacetaldehyde or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt as an active ingredient; and to a pharmaceutical composition or a food composition including the composition and controlling the transition of breast cancer or treating or preventing breast cancer. Phenylacetaldehyde of the present invention controls the growth of breast cancer cells, and controls the generation of breast cancer stem cells. Moreover, the expression of autonomous regenerating genes such as Nanog, Sox2, Oct4, and CD44 known to specifically express in breast cancer stem cells is controlled, and the generation of IL-6 known to be in charged in generating mammosphere of breast cancer stem cells is controlled. Also, it has been confirmed that an STAT3 signaling pathway is controlled. Accordingly, the compound controls the growth of breast cancer stem cells, and can be utilized in treating breast cancer.
