The three-dimensional model contains a small number of large triangles and usually has a large number of small to medium connected components, usually containing arbitrary connectivity. The efficiency of the compressed representation of a large multi-component three-dimensional model can be improved by detecting and expressing the similarities between the components even though the components are not exactly the same. The present application uses a displacement map to differentially encode two or more identical but similar geometric patterns based on clustering and cluster representative surfaces (CRS). A method of encoding a plurality of geometric patterns includes detecting and encoding a coincident copy of a geometric pattern, detecting and clustering a pseudo-geometric pattern (200), and detecting a partial similarity (300) do. The step of detecting (300) the similarity includes generating a cluster representative surface, generating a displacement map for one or more clustered geometric patterns, and encoding the common surface and displacement map.;
