A solution-derived nanocomposite (SDN) precursor solution is disclosed that comprises at least one metal precursor dissolved in a liquid comprising a polar protic and a polar aprotic solvent. The precursor solution is characterized in that a shear force forms the gel after it has been applied to the precursor solution or to a thin layer of the precursor solution. A method for producing a thin film using the precursor solution, a thin film prepared using the precursor solution, a thin film having a minimum surface area, and a thin film containing device disclosed herein are also disclosed.
