An optical perspective (OST) head-mounted display (HMD) uses a correction matrix, which has a fixed subset of the adjustable parameters within all of its parameters. The initial values for the correction matrix are based on the model head. A predetermined set of incremental adjustment values is provided for each adjustable parameter. During calibration, the correction matrix is cyclically cycled through its incremental parameter change as previously defined, and the virtual object is projected for each incremental change. The resulting projected virtual object is then aligned to a reference actual object, and the projected virtual object that is best aligned is identified. The settings of the correction matrix, which will result in the best aligned virtual object, are considered to be the final correction matrix to be used for the OST HMD.
