The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for simplifying a model, and more particularly, to an apparatus and method for simplifying a model by using shape complexity. The apparatus for simplifying a model according to an embodiment of the present invention includes: a shape complexity calculating unit which calculates the shape complexity representing the shape complexity with regard to each element included in a model; a scoring unit which scores each element based on the shape complexity; and an element removing unit for removing the element from the model based on the score according to the target accuracy of the model. Accordingly, the present invention can maintain the whole outer shape of the model even though a level of detail (LOD) is decreased by simplification.
