An apparatus comprising: a first electrode coupled to a first portion of a head of a subject for collecting an electroencephalogram (EEG) signal, the first electrode comprising: a first contact for collecting a first signal from the first portion of the head; and a second contact to collect a second signal from the first region of the head; a second electrode coupled to a second region of the head for collecting an EEG signal, the second electrode comprising: a third contact for collecting a third signal from the second region of the head; and a fourth contact for collecting a fourth signal from the second area of the head; and a communicative processor coupled to the first electrode and the second electrode for: separately processing the first signal, the second signal, the third signal, and the fourth signal; apply a first weighting factor to the first signal to generate a first weighted signal, apply a second weighting factor to the second signal to generate a second weighted signal, apply a third weighting factor to the third signal to produce a third weighted signal and apply a fourth weighting factor to the fourth signal to produce a fourth weighted signal; combine the first weighted signal and the second weighted signal to produce a first virtual electrode signal, wherein the first virtual signal corresponds to a signal that is at a location between ...
