The present invention relates to a blood pressure monitor for adaptively monitoring the arterial blood pressure of a patient depending on his condition. At least one sensor (S1) generates a sensor signal having at least a first parameter associated with the arterial blood pressure, and preferably a second parameter representative of the condition of the patient. A processor unit with a memory and a sequencer receives the sensor data and evaluates it. First, in a learning phase on the basis of the second parameter at least two classes of the sensor data or the states of the patient and thereby respective quantiles of the first parameter and associated risk threshold values are determined. Thereafter, in a monitoring phase, the state of the patient is determined from the current sensor data on the basis of the second parameter, and a risk signal is determined on the basis of the first parameter in comparison with the risk threshold value associated with the current state of the patient.
