A runtime camera system is described. The runtime camera system includes a illuminator to illuminate a region within the runtime camera system field of view. The time-of-flight camera system includes an image sensor to receive optical signals from the illumination and to determine depth profile information within the field of view using run-time measurement techniques. The image sensor has circuitry to determine one or more regions within the field of view in which a received optical signal from illumination was weak. The illuminator also serves to illuminate the one or more regions with stronger light than that received by the one or more regions during the lighting. Each of the one or more regions is smaller than the region. The image sensor also serves to receive optical signals from the re-illumination to determine depth profile information within the one or more regions.
