The invention relates to an electrolyte for a magnesium-sulfur battery cell, which is obtainable by reacting magnesium bis-hexamethyldisilazide [(HMDS) 2Mg] with AlCl3 in a molar ratio of 1: 2 and dissolving the reaction product in tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether or bis (2-methoxyethyl ) ether, wherein the electrolyte further a) 0.1 to 1.0 vol .-% of one or more co-solvents, preferably of one or more glycol ethers, and b) 0.01 wt .-% to 0.05 wt .-%, preferably 0.02 wt .-% based on the total mixture of at least one benzodiazepine derivative contains.
