According to the invention, a method for selecting an algorithm for correcting at least one image artifact in an image data record acquired by means of a medical imaging system and comprising at least one region of interest of an examination subject is provided. The method comprises the following steps: identifying on the basis of the image data set of at least one object component causing the image artifact within the region of interest of the examination subject, determining on the basis of the image data set at least one characteristic descriptive of the object constituent, determining an artifact correction algorithm based on the at least one characteristic, and applying of the artifact correction algorithm on the image data set. Furthermore, a corresponding data processing system is provided as well as a medical imaging system comprising the data processing system according to the invention.
