Method for creating and distributing art-directable videos with a continuous dynamic range

New systems and methods for creating, compressing, and distributing video or image content are described, which are graded for a variety of image displays with different dynamic ranges. In realizations, the content created is content with a "continuous dynamic range" (CDR) - a new representation of pixel luminance as a function of the dynamic range of the image display. The creation of the CDR content involves grading a source content to a minimum dynamic range and a maximum dynamic range, and defining a luminance of each pixel of an image or video frame of the source content as a continuous function between the minimum and maximum dynamic ranges. Additional implementations describe a new graphical user interface for creating and editing the CDR content.
