A method for monitoring a typing tool comprises the following steps: an acquisition of at least one recorded signal (4), in the form of an acoustic amplitude as a function of time, by a sensor placed on the tool, on at least one time slot (At) during which a workpiece is compressed by the tool or is compressed against the tool, -a step of time analysis of the recorded signal ( 4), for calculating at least one mathematical signature (Sp) resulting from a statistical type calculation on the sequence of acoustic amplitudes (Xn), -a calculation of a criterion value (Critp) of coherence as a function of the mathematical signature of the piece (Sp) and according to at least one mathematical signature (Sp-1, Sp-2, Sp-3, Sp-4) of at least one other piece previously formatted on the same tool a comparison of the value (Critp) of the criterion of coherence with at least one threshold (S).
