A self-contained, self-powered anti-collision safety system for high altitude, solar powered, unmanned aircraft (e.g. HALE) which automatically activates when the aircraft flies at an altitude where it may come into conflict with commercial manned aircraft. The safety system controller comprises a safety means, power source (e.g. battery 1) for powering it, air pressure detector and switch 2 wherein the pressure detector closes the switch to activate the safety means when the air pressure exceeds a value indicative of a pre-set value and opens the switch to deactivate it at the aircraft’s operating altitude. The safety system may include a Mode S ADS-B Out transponder and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receiver 5 and an anti-collision strobe light 3. At least the power source, pressure detector, switch and transponder may be in an aerodynamic housing 7 attached to an airframe exterior using low-temperature adhesive. The aircraft may descent if the safety system fails.
