A method for detecting an infection or infectious agent associated disease condition in a subject based on biomarkers present in exosomes in a bodily fluid sample is disclosed. Also disclosed is a method for monitoring the course of infection or an infectious disease condition in a subject based on the presence or absence of exosome biomarkers in bodily fluid samples from the subject, a method for monitoring the effectiveness of treatment to a subject with an infectious disease or infectious agent associated disease condition based on exosome biomarkers and a kit for detecting an infectious disease or infectious agent associated disease condition in a subject based on exosome biomarkers.
