PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a diagnosis technique of the severity of fulminant liver failure based on an objective index, and preventive or therapeutic agents of fulminant liver failure based on a novel action mechanism.SOLUTION: A diagnostic method measures each protein expression level of CXCL8and cathepsin L in a biological sample isolated from a subject, and determines onset possibility and/or acuteness of fulminant liver failure in the subject on the basis of the measured expression level. And, the fulminant liver failure can be prevented or treated, by administering the cathepsin L or the expression vector, and supplying the cathepsin L to the liver of the fulminant liver failure having decreased expression of the cathepsin L.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 3-2
