PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a terahertz wave generation element or the like, which includes a waveguide capable of confining light in a narrower range than the width of an optical coupling member.SOLUTION: A terahertz wave generation element comprises: a waveguide including an electro-optical crystal 4; and an optical coupling member 7 which guides a terahertz wave generated from the electro-optical crystal from the waveguide to a space by light propagating through the waveguide. The terahertz wave generation element also uses a Cherenkov-type phase matching method. In addition, the waveguide has a waveguide structure for confining light in a first direction which is perpendicular to the propagation direction of the light and in which the waveguide and the optical coupling member are aligned, and in a second direction perpendicular to the propagation direction and the first direction, and is configured to confine the light in a narrower range than the width of the optical coupling member in the second direction.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
