A copper-containing multi-metal catalyst comprising either zirconia or a carbon support with improved utility for obtaining bio-based 1,2-propanediol products by hydrocracking glycerol or a glycerol-containing feedstock Describe. In particular, examples of this type of catalyst supported on improved carbon are described with respect to this reaction and other processes in which hydrogen is used, along with methods for maintaining the activity of these catalysts. In the preparation of these improved catalysts, the associated processing methods are used to convert carbon that has the desired mechanical strength, but previously lacked activity, such as glycerol or a glycerol-containing feedstock. Can be used to obtain 1,2-propanediol, whereby a copper-containing multi-metallic catalyst can be used for bio-based propylene glycol using a carbon support that would have been unsuitable before.
