Monitoring compliance with medication plans using sensors

A method and apparatus for monitoring and / or managing adherence to a medication plan, including the use of sensors. Discharging a medicine from a container generally involves an operation of the container, and the operation can be a characteristic operation. In some embodiments, the processor monitors motion sensor data from a motion sensor physically coupled to the container such that the motion sensor and the container move together. The processor analyzes the sensor data to determine the physical operation of the container. If the determined action matches the characteristic action when the drug is being dispensed, the processor can determine that the drug has been dispensed. The computer system can compare the dispensed medication with the dosing plan to determine compliance status with the dosing plan.
