The reaction product of diamine with the reaction product of monoamine and bis anhydride is included as an additive in the metal electroplating bath. The metal electroplating bath deposits a metal layer having good throwing power and having a substantially planar surface. Metal plating baths can be used to deposit metal on substrates having surface features such as through holes and vias. [Selection figure] None
