The reactions induced by high energy radiation of isobutane-propylene mixtures, isobutane, and olefins adsorbed on silica gel and silica gel modified with electrophilic additives have been studied. The effects of such variables as electron percent coverage, variation in metal oxide, method of incorporating and concentration of ferric oxide, mole ratio of reactants_, and choice of olefin were determined. Extensive energy transfer from the support to the adsorbed hydrocarbon was demonstrated for each hydrocarbon studied. Enhanced yields were observed for the propylene alkylation of isobutane on modified silica gels compared with that obtained on silica gel. The alkylation was shown to proceed preferentially by an ionic reaction mechanism. Factors considered important for interpretation of the results include surface chemisorption of the olefin and semiconductor properties of the support.nThe possibility of utilizing high energy radiation to promote ionic chain reactions with an efficient use of the radiation energy has been demon strated. These results are in distinct contrast with the usual free radical reactions observed in radiation studies of hydrocarbons.
