Molecular probes for detecting gram-negative bacteria in vitro and in vivo

A probe is provided that includes a label and a binding moiety, wherein the binding moiety is adapted to bind to Gram negative bacteria and not substantially bind to animal cells or Gram positive bacteria. Also provided is a method for detecting the presence of bacteria in a target area, which allows broad detection of bacteria and determination of whether the bacteria are Gram negative or Gram positive.
