PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive catalyst with which 1,4-pentanediol (1,4-PDO) can be obtained from γ-valerolactone (GVL) with high reaction selectivity and high reaction yield.;SOLUTION: The hydrogenation catalyst includes an oxide composite including copper oxide and zinc oxide. The method for producing 1,4-pentanediol from γ-valerolactone includes following steps: (a) a step to prepare a reactor and feed the hydrogenation catalyst into the reactor; (b) a step to arbitrarily and selectively activate the catalyst by hydrogen reduction; (c) a step to prepare γ-valerolactone; (d) a step to prepare hydrogen gas; (e) a step to supply γ-valerolactone and hydrogen gas into the reactor, mix the content, and obtain a mixture; and (f) a step to hydrogenate γ-valerolactone by heating the mixture and bring the mixture into contact with the catalyst.;SELECTED DRAWING: None;COPYRIGHT: (C)2018,JPO&INPIT
