As used herein, a compound of the formula Y-X-Z wherein X is Fe (III) or Mn (II), Y and Z are each independently pyrophosphate and a bisphosphonate (eg 1-hydroxybisphosphonate) (MRI) contrast agent comprising a compound having a structure represented by the following formula (I) or a pharmaceutically acceptable hydrate and / or a salt thereof. Methods of using MRI contrast agents are also provided.
