PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tunnel excavator that enables calibration of a distortion sensor to be made during excavation also, the distortion sensor measuring acting force exerted on a cutter head.;SOLUTION: A tunnel excavator 1 includes: a cutter head 11; a cutter column 12 supporting the cutter head 11 and rotating with the cutter head 11; a distortion sensor 22 provided on the cutter head 11 or the cutter column 12; a propulsion jack 21 for propelling the cutter head 11; an earth pressure sensor 19 for measuring an earth pressure component Fb of force exerted on the cutter head 11; and a control part 27 for acquiring a measurement value of acting force Fc exerted on the cutter head 11, based on an output from the distortion sensor.
