PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel chiral dopant for liquid-crystal materials which consists of a square planar Pd (II) dinuclear complex having axial chirality.SOLUTION: There is provided a chiral dopant for liquid-crystal materials represented by following graphical formula which consists of an asymmetric bis(&bgr;-diketonato) group-containing Pd (II) dinuclear complex having axial chirality as the R or S form that is an enantiomer. In the graphical formula, A, B, Rare selected from an aliphatic hydrocarbon group, an alicyclic hydrocarbon group, an aromatic hydrocarbon group, and the like, A and B are different from each other and form an asymmetric bis(&bgr;-diketonato) group between two Pd (II) ions, and Ris selected from: hydrogen; an aliphatic hydrocarbon group which may have a substituent; an alicyclic hydrocarbon group which may have a substituent; an aromatic hydrocarbon group which may have a substituent; a heterocyclic hydrocarbon group which may have a substituent; and a group formed by binding two or more of them.
