Various systems and methods for remote surface sensing using guided surface wave modes on lossy media have been disclosed. One system, among others, is a guided surface waveguide probe configured to emit a guided surface wave along the surface of a lossy conductive medium, and a remotely located subsurface object is driven by a guided surface wave. A receiver configured to receive the backscatter reflected upon irradiation.
