The invention concerns a gear actuator having precisely one motor and a control system for activating the gear actuator. The object of the invention is to present a gear actuator which can be used both for a gear-shift movement and for a gear-selection movement. To that end, a gear actuator according to the invention comprises at least one gear by means of which the movement of a spindle activated by the motor is switched from a first into a second movement mode, to which end a translatory movement of a spindle nut is converted by means of toothed wheels and a shaft wheel into a rotary movement of the selector shaft and a rotary movement of the spindle nut is converted by means of a translatory toothed wheel and a selector pot into a translatory movement of the selector shaft.
